Beware the fake remote job listing

Job seekers, beware the fake remote job listings. Any job that qualifies “remote” with “if you are within x miles of an office, you must be in the office y days a week” isn’t actually remote. I’ve seen dozens of these posts recently and there’s an obvious trend toward pseudo RTO but still positioning jobs as remote.

Think about it, there’s nothing to stop these companies from changing the rules from under you at any time. It might be 30 miles this year, but what’s to stop them from making it 20 miles next year? It might be one day a week in the office this year, but maybe 4 next year. Any number of companies in the past year have employed this strategy to force resignations. It’s fake remote, period.

It’s well within a company’s rights to make whatever policies they see fit, but if remote work is table stakes for you, just be cautious when you see those kinds of job postings. Read the fine print. Talk to them about their *commitment* to remote work, past and present. Read between the lines on what they’re saying and how they’re saying it.
